By Melissa | Animal Intuitive, Energy Healer & Holistic Pet Health Coach
One of the most common questions I get is:
“So... are you an animal psychic?”
Honestly? It’s a fair question and one I’ve spent time sitting with myself.
There are so many titles floating around in the world of animal healing and intuitive work: animal communicator, intuitive, psychic, medium, healer. And the truth is, they all touch on different aspects of what I do. But the terms I return to again and again are:
Animal Communicator and Animal Intuitive
So let’s talk about it. What I do, what I don’t do, and why I choose the words I do to describe my work.
🔮 Am I a psychic?
By definition, technically yes.
The word psychic is often defined as:
"a person who is sensitive to nonphysical or supernatural forces and influences; a person who is able to perceive information hidden from the normal senses, often through extrasensory perception."
I do receive information in ways that aren’t tied to the five physical senses. Messages come through imagery, emotion, sensation, and sudden knowing. I use all of the "clairs":
Clairvoyance: clear seeing (images or visions)
Clairaudience: clear hearing (words, sounds)
Clairsentience: clear feeling (emotions, physical sensations)
Claircognizance: clear knowing (instant knowing without logical source)
Clairgustance and Clairalience: clear tasting and smelling (receive tastes or scents that carry meaning or messages)
Sometimes this information comes through telepathy, which simply means communication without spoken words. It’s mind-to-mind, heart-to-heart. I’m tuning into the soul-level communication that’s always happening if we get still enough to listen. A quiet energetic exchange that often carries more truth than verbal language.
So yes, I suppose I meet the definition of an animal psychic.
But here’s why that word doesn’t quite sit right with me:
It implies that what I do is somehow supernatural or out of reach for most people.
And I don’t believe that.
At all.
What I do is not supernatural. It’s natural. It’s something we are all born with. It can be remembered, practiced, nurtured. It’s available to all of us if we listen.
The only difference is that I’ve spent years listening. Honing. Trusting.
This work is not about performing. It’s not about showmanship. It’s about relationship.
That’s why the term "psychic" feels too flat. Too limiting. It suggests a one-way energetic reading, but what I do is a conversation.
I call myself an animal communicator and animal intuitive.
Because my work is not just about sensing energy. It’s about communicating with animals in a conscious, respectful, and sacred way.
It’s not just, "What do I sense about this animal?" It’s, "What is this animal saying? What do they want me to understand? What do they want their person to know?"
And the animals do tell me. Sometimes with words or images. Sometimes through feelings in my own body. Sometimes they show me stories. Take me on journeys. Share memories.
In many sessions, I also offer medical intuitive scans. I tune into the animal’s body and receive information about areas of imbalance or discomfort. I never diagnose or replace veterinary care, but what comes through can offer insight into how the animal feels, what they may be experiencing, and how we might support their healing.
And yes, animals in spirit often come through. So mediumship is part of my work, too. But I let the animals lead. I don't force anything. I open the door, and they decide what messages are ready to be shared.
What about mediumship?
Yes, this is a big part of my work.
Animals who’ve passed often come through in sessions. Sometimes it’s unexpected, and other times it’s the whole reason someone reaches out to me. Those conversations are sacred. Emotional. Healing.
I don’t advertise myself solely as a medium, but mediumship often flows into my sessions in the most natural, gentle way. Animals in spirit have just as much to say as those still here with us. And I’m honored to be part of that bridge between worlds.
This is not a gift. It’s a skill.
People sometimes say, "You have such a gift." And while I appreciate the sentiment, I believe this ability lives inside everyone. It’s not something I was handed. It’s something I relearned. Something I continue to practice every day.
So yes, I could call myself an animal psychic. But I choose animal communicator and animal intuitive because they reflect the relationship-based, heart-led, co-creative nature of this work.
It’s not about what I know. It’s about what the animal wants to share.
And I am honored to listen.
I’m not here to perform.
I’m here to connect.
To hold space.
To honor the sacred bond between you and your animal, body and spirit.
At the end of the day, labels are just labels.
Whether you call it intuition, energy work, or something else entirely… if it brings healing, connection, and peace, then it’s working.
