Energy is Universal — Across Species and Cultures
When I first began working with chakras in animals, I had no idea how deep, emotional, and soul-led these sessions would become. While many of us are familiar with chakras through yoga, Eastern philosophy, or healing practices, it's important to note that the concept of energy centers isn’t exclusive to one culture.
Similar ideas exist all around the world—the Dantian in Chinese medicine, the sephirot in Kabbalah, pranic channels in Ayurvedic tradition, and even indigenous concepts of energy flow. At the heart of each is the understanding that the body holds energy, and when it’s flowing freely, balance and healing can occur.
That same energy flows through our pets, too.
What Are Chakras (for Animals & Humans)?
Chakras are energy centers that correspond with emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Though animals don’t sit in meditation or chant mantras, they absolutely have chakras, and I see them clearly during my energy sessions.
Each chakra has its own frequency, color, and theme:
Root: safety, grounding
Sacral: emotions, creativity
Solar Plexus: confidence, identity
Heart: love, connection
Throat: communication, expression
Third Eye: intuition, awareness
Crown: spiritual connection
In animals, these themes show up just as vividly, sometimes even more so, because they don’t mask or suppress their emotions the way we often do.
What I See: Colors, Sounds, Textures
When I connect with an animal’s chakras, the first thing I notice is color. Each chakra has its own hue, and when the energy is flowing, these colors are vibrant, sparkling, and ethereal. But here’s the fun part—it’s not always visual. Sometimes, I can actually feel the color.
Now, you might be thinking, “Melissa, what in the world does that mean?” I know, conceptually that sounds a little out there! But it never fails—in nearly every energy class I teach, students are completely shocked when they realize they can feel a color, too. More on that another time! Sometimes the colors pulse or swirl like silk in water. Other times, I’ll experience textures; a sticky feeling, a gritty surface, or something feathery-soft. Occasionally, I’ll even hear music or tones that correspond with the energy field.
When a chakra is imbalanced, it may appear dull, small, or stagnant, and it often feels like it’s not spinning the way it should. Some chakras feel collapsed inward, others feel tight or like they’re blocked by a wall of static. I don’t just see it—I feel it in my own body, too. I can sense when the energy isn’t flowing quite right—when something’s off or out of balance.
Physical & Emotional Signs of Imbalance
These energetic imbalances don’t just stay in the energy field—they often manifest as physical or emotional symptoms.
An anxious dog who’s fearful of new people might have blockages or tightness in the root or sacral chakras—the centers of safety and emotional processing.
A cat with hyperthyroidism may show a pronounced imbalance in the throat chakra, which governs both communication and the thyroid area of the body.
Grief, trauma, abandonment, over-protectiveness—each of these emotional patterns can show up clearly in specific chakras.
Every session is a little different, but over time, I’ve seen clear patterns emerge. The energy tells a story.
The Chakras Speak
During an energy session—especially when I’m running through and clearing each chakra—I experience much like in animal communication sessions, what I can only describe as soul-to-soul communication.
It’s more than just observing. It becomes a conversation—not in words, but in the language of the heart. A deep, intuitive knowing that moves through emotion, sensation, and energetic connection. The energy itself tells me about the animal’s history: traumas they haven’t let go of, emotional wounds they’re still holding, and even beautiful truths about their relationships with their humans. Sometimes this communication is as clear as words. Other times, it’s more of a feeling or an image—a memory, a moment, a need.
This is the space where energy healing and animal communication begin to merge. It’s tender, and often sacred.
A Moment That Stays With Me
There was a session I’ll never forget. I was working with a senior dog named Lily who had recently lost her canine companion, Jen. Her heart chakra was so dim and slow I almost cried. It wasn’t just sadness, it was a deep sense of being lost. As I gently held space, her energy began to shift. The heart chakra slowly filled with soft green light, and I sensed a presence, her friend, offering comfort from beyond.
By the end of the session, there was peace.
This work continues to amaze me.

Try this simple grounding practice: Place your hands gently on your pet (or hover a few inches above), take a few deep breaths, and imagine soft white light flowing down through you into them. Visualize this light gently balancing their energy, no need to force—just trust.
Where We Go From Here: Color & Chakras
Now that you have a better understanding of what chakras are and how they show up in animals, let me leave you with this: Have you ever heard of color therapy? It’s the practice of using the corresponding chakra colors to support and balance energy—and yes, it works beautifully with animals, too.
In my next post, I’ll share how I use color therapy and other tools like pendulums in my sessions, and how you can begin to incorporate these at home to support your pet’s emotional and physical well-being. Think: calming anxiety with soft reds and oranges, boosting vitality with yellow, or opening the heart with greens and pinks.
Color is energy. And it’s more powerful than most people realize.

Energy Is Love
At the end of the day, energy work isn’t about fixing or diagnosing, it’s about listening, loving, and holding space for animals in a way that goes beyond words. They already know how to heal. Sometimes, they just need a little help remembering.
And I’m honored to be part of that remembering.
